MrM get your facts straight. Bush corrupt? Don't think so. Liberal fools like yourself drink the Kool-Aid put forth by the Obama Enamoured Media. The USA is safer due to GW Bush like it or not. Even Obama wants to keep Gitmo open. Growup as your views will change as you see the real truth and take the time to research the facts instead of getting them spoon-fed to you by the OF Media

I really can't stand when Americans are so self-righteous and eager to call foreign governments "corrupt". Have you forgotten the past 8 years under Bush Jr? Calling Mexico's government corrupt may make some Americans feel better about their own country but it means little when looked at from the perspective of the Mexican country as a whole. Mexicans are living in a state of constant terror, perpetrated not by corrupt government officials, but by armed gangs of thugs trained to kill by U.S. Special Forces. Narcoterrorist groups operate with impunity because Mexican authorities have become the target of "Sicarios" (death squads so violent, they make the Cosa Nostra look like playground bullies) who force them into either joining the drug cartel or having their head chopped off and delivered to their families in a plastic bag. Having corrupt governments obviously doesn't help the situation, but the root of the problem is not the corruption in Government itself but the massive demand for drugs that were designated illegal in the U.S. and the stupidly called "War on Drugs" that has made it a priority to waste your tax payer dollars in initiatives that have failed miserably. Please, if you have an opinion at least make it a smart one.

Maybe the article below is a sign that things might change for the better. I long for the day that the powers that be will realize that the war on drugs probably kill more people directly and indirectly that the actual drugs do. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN11358345?rpc=64" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN...</a rel="nofollow">" target="_blank">http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN...</a></a>

Yes, they declared Mexico a "failed state" similar to Pakistan. Calderon has been fighting that one left and right, making the argument that there are problems in particular regions but that the state overall is not affected. I can see both perspectives---I do think the corruption in Mexico has gotten so far out of control that the state apparatus is no longer functional. When the president is accused of having ties to a drug cartel, things are not looking good. But I agree that--as of yet--the drug violence has not yet greatly affected the daily lives of most people, and it remains contained within the twisted world of the cartels, the police, and the government. In the North, it probably affects people much more than here in the South. I know the U.S government has forbidden soldiers based in San Diego to go to Tijuana, and issued warnings about travel there and in Ciudad Juarez. What I'm worried about is that as the U.S pours more money and weapons into the corrupt government a sort of civil war situation (like what happened in Colombia) will break out.

The Mexican government is very corrupt, but that's not the root of the problem here. Banning any substance drives up prices and gives bad men the opportunity and ability to have a monopoly on all trade in whatever good is banned. With no legal means of settling disputes, you have a situation where organized violence is always the inevitable conclusion. This is exactly what happened in America during alcohol prohibition. The War on Drugs is what needs to be eliminated here in my opinion.

It's getting pretty crazy down in Mexico. So much so that the United States Joint Forces Command considers Mexico to be as dangerous as Pakistan (<a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/09/news/letter.php)." target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/09/news/lette...</a rel="nofollow">" target="_blank">http://www.iht.com/articles/2009/01/09/news/lette...</a></a>
