With all the bad news over the past few weeks– protests in Bangkok, terrorist attacks in Mumbai, and political chaos in Canada–you might have missed the latest: Greece is in the throes of turbulent riots.

According to a report published by the International Herald Tribune, the streets of Athens and Thessaloniki have been taken over by “militant youths” who are discharging their rage against police.

A 15 year old boy was recently shot and killed by police officers. A police statement released yesterday indicated that officer shot the child when they themselves were targeted by a gang of 30 teens while patrolling a neighborhood known for harboring “unruly” “anarchist” kids.

The riots have been a dramatic counterpoint to peaceful, non-violent protests. The riots are being described as the worst ever in modern history.
