@Hal: Hal, I think the answer to your question may vary significantly from one country to the next, but it’s a good question–and certainly one that any person/loved one involved in this type of scenario would want to consider.

@Stephanie: Stephanie- Thanks for sharing your experience and insight. It’s one thing to talk about euthanasia hypothetically. And it’s another entirely to have firsthand experience of witnessing such profound suffering that you might find yourself able to understand and endorse it.

After seeing my mother die an agonizing and extremely painful death from lung cancer, I would support anyone who would rather die on their terms rather than suffer. Why do humans feel the need to tell other humans what to do with their bodies? It is my own belief that our creator loves us all, no matter how we die. I realize others may disagree but I would never judge a person wanting to die over suffering unless I walked in their shoes.

Do patients’ home countries allow their remains to be repatriated, or do they have to be buried in Switzerland? Sounds like a pain for those surviving you.
