Israel did not kidnap civilians. They detained people trying to illegally enter their country after they ignored an order to turn back. Aid workers are free to cross legally into Gaza via land, as so many do, rather than attempting to enter illegally as this ship did. There was an existing naval closure on the waters near the Gaza Strip, according to the Jerusalem Post. If the ship had obeyed the order to turn back, the IDF wouldn't have had to intercept them.

Since Israel has been terrorized for years and years by daily bombings of its southern towns of Sderot and Ashkelon by terrorists in the Gaza Strip (which almost never make the U.S. news), not to mention the more deadly (and thus, more newsworthy) terrorism they are constantly forced to fight off from the Arab countries that surround them, it is, of course, understandable that they must consider a vessel refusing to obey orders to get out of its water a serious threat.
