The United States has taken a lot of heat in the last few years.

Today, on the 4th of July, I thought I’d toss out a few links that dare to break the negative mold.

First off, over at Brave New Traveler, Pulse’s own Julie Schwietert on why traveling is the most patriotic act of all.

Meanwhile, Nerve.com’s indie movie blog, The Screengrab, offers up 15 Movies That Show What’s RIGHT With The U.S.

Lastly, my own national holiday, Canada Day, was earlier this week on July 1. I wrote a post at Vagablogging in its honour:
Do you celebrate national holidays when you travel?

Eva- Thanks for the mention, but thanks, too, for this great list of movies! To Nerve's picks, I'd definitely add "Good Night, and Good Luck." While in some ways, viewers may see this movie as evidence of what was/is wrong with America, the emphasis on the character development of Edward R. Murrow and the careful attention to detail underscores how important journalists are. In a similar vein, I'd recommend the movie "Talk to Me" (with one of my favorite actors, Don Cheadle), about an ex-convict who became a major US radio personality in the 1960s and played a significant role in shaping political thought and opinion in Washington, D.C. Both, in addition to resuscitating overlooked parts of U.S. history, focus on amazing, interesting real-life people; besides, both movies are really well done.
