Check your calendars, folks: April Fool’s Day was more than two months ago. So, yes, this is for real.

After a long-running battle with PETA, KFC Canada has announced plans to upgrade its chicken slaughtering methods and – gasp of shock – introduce several vegan and vegetarian menu options, including some Kentucky Fried Unchicken.

From the article:

“The fake chicken, known as unchicken, has been around for years and is available in a handful of restaurants and stores in Canada. Most of the fake meats are soy-based and fair game for vegans. Some may contain eggs, but are meat-free.”

The thing is, I’ve never been a big fake meat fan to begin with, and I can’t see myself trusting the Colonel to do it right.

What do you think? Is this change finger-lickin’ good news?

I'm actually a little disappointed by this.

Normally I'd be more then open to vegi and vegan options making a showing on a menu, I have friends who live such lifestyles and if I eat out with them, I like them to be able to make choices they are happy with when they order.

However, I always respected the fact that at Kentucky Fried Chicken that's what you get, fried chicken, and if you don't like it, you go some where else. (Or have corn on the cob if you really must)

It's not a position I'd normally take, but the fact KFC stuck to their guns impressed me. Now? Well it's the first step towards becoming just another fast food joint with nothing unique about it.

Ha, yeah, I sort of know what you mean, Paul. I remember when McDonald's first rolled out their "healthy options" menu (ha) I thought, why not just be what you are? Love it or hate it, McD's is not supposed to be about healthy options.
