Alaska Loves Sarah Palin… Right?

Hundreds of Alaskans rallied in Anchorage this week – but not, as you might think, to support their Governor in her Vice-Presidential bid.

Instead, participants in what was reportedly the largest protest gathering in Alaskan history took aim at McCain/Palin, and made it clear their governor does NOT speak for them.

Take a look:

Great to see “Hockey Mama For Obama” representin’ for the greatest (ahem) sport on Earth!

Amen, sister.

Polar bear moms speak out.

Up with community organizers and down with Exxon justice!

Now there’s an image for you…

Does the fact that this even needs to be pointed out scare anyone besides me?

I always love a good “bare/bear” pun.

McTrue.

Vote Issues, Not Gender.

‘Nuff said.

And lots of them children too I see. Just as retarded as hard core religious zealots that make their kids go with them to snake handling revivals are these people that have their kids waving signs about things they know nothing about. classic…..

What's with the polar bears again and again? Is this really the most pressing issue on anyone's mind…making sure that polar bears do not decline at the cost of any other concerns? What kind of a twit holds a sign basically stating "Hey, look at me…polar bears are the *most pressing* issue of our generation!".

Mr Dobbs, I don't know what you're talking about, that's half the population of the town she was mayor of!! Polar bears indeed! Just the kind of rigorous political training you need to RUN THE FREE WORLD.

Hi Bob, Thanks for stopping by. By all accounts I've read, it was the largest rally in Alaskan history. You're free to ignore it if you like, of course, but I think that's pretty significant.

Children aren't mindless robots, and with some exposure to world events they're perfectly capable of forming their own opinions. I attended political rallies as a child – sometimes without my parents! I also raised money for causes I believed in… But thanks for the assumption that everyone under 18 is ignorant, Bob. Incidentally, Palin is one of those "hard core religious zealots" – her church is one of those that believes our children must be trained as Christ's warriors for the coming end of days.

Actually, plenty of folks do believe that climate change is the most pressing issue of our generation. Or at least, it would have been if George Bush and Co hadn't gone ahead and made Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan/etc nearly as big an issue!

Oh, I'm so glad this got posted; people need to know that many Alaskans do not stand behind that "Bush in a skirt". I heard that the rally was brilliant.

Dude, I'm from Anchorage. It was the biggest political rally in the history of the state. I'm not going to bother checking the ADN, but it was around 1,500, I recall. The fact is, Palin is hard core into cronyism, has not even shown interest in politics outside Alaska (I mean, at least recognize the *term* Bush Doctrine) and yes, if she ever ended up president she would appoint more Supreme Court justices like the ones who screwed over fishermen in the Exxon verdict this year. The only thing she has going for her is that the press, to even make a pretense of accuracy, has to call her qualifications into question. That lets the Republicans pretend they're being persecuted by the media, which lets them distract us from issues. Meanwhile, Palin's stance on abortion gets back the support of the less excited Republican base. When McCain chose her (or caved and let his new advisors choose her) he proved he puts politics first and country second. The media is trying to say that she is somehow the face of Alaska. They run these prepackaged "freakish red state" stories about how all anyone in Alaska wants is God and guns and simple-minded politics. We're more complex than that. I like both guns and God, but they don't make me rabid for McCain. Alaska was leaning towards Obama. The point of these people standing up is that we refuse to lend our state's image to the Republican campaign, and we refuse to redefine our state's character with a politician as our mascot. Susan Butcher is an Alaskan. Scott Gomez is an Alaskan. Sarah Palin is too, but I won't have people believing we're all like her. That's why that rally mattered.

If it's not making money, Bob's not interested. Polar bears? What'd they ever do for me? Poor people? Go die! There's no money in you. And everyone who thinks differently from the neocon coloring book is "retarded." Classy, Bob… Next thing you know, you'll be making fun of children – whoops, you already got to it. What do you do for an encore, bite the heads off kittens?

"They run these prepackaged "freakish red state" stories about how all anyone in Alaska wants is God and guns and simple-minded politics. We're more complex than that." Right on! Finally, someone who recognizes the "One State, Two State, Red State, Blue State" as dumbing down politics even more. If we could get rid of the outdated "electoral college," the election wouldn't come down to the swing states every four years, but a more accurate representation of the people.
